I just loved spending a day with gannets. This shot was taken with the bog standard Canon 18-55mm lens

Peregrine Falcon

Another artwork image.

Peregrine Falcon

Taken from the Manchester Town Hall clock tower.

The original of this shot had a very bland background. Since our peregrines hunt at night using the ambient light from the city, I thought it would be an idea to do something a little surrealistic to represent the bird as night time hunter. I thought some might see it as a bit silly but when seeing the bird fly over the Big Wheel and lit up, a chill went down my spine. Maybe it wasn't daft after all. I entered the digital artwork to the digital artwork category in the International Wild Bird Photographer of the Year competition. It bombed. My consolation was that Chris Packham liked it. The image has been used on TV and requested by several conservation organisations.

Bolton Peregrine

I do like black and white photographic images. I changed this image from colour to black and white and darkened the corners for effect. Not quite a ' Neil Brandt' image but the best I can do! Check out Neil's work who manages spectacular shots of African wildlife using wide angle lenses.

Having travelled to Norfolk to do little stints I was not able to resist doing the sanderlings when the light was fading but at its best and the waves providing a superb background

Sanderling, Dona Nook

Another one of my favourite birds to photograph. Donna Nook can get pretty cold and windy in the middle of winter but getting close to sanderlings and Atlantic grey seals is an experience I wouldn't miss. My day ended with a fantastic sunset.

Redshank at dusk

Several years ago I went to Faihaven Lythm to photograph the red throated diver and Slavonian grebe. When the light had gone I popped over the hill to the sea shore to enjoy the sunset and photograph any waders that might be there.

Razorbill portrait, Great Saltee Island

In 2006 myself and Annette Cutts were invited over by Clive Timmons (photographer) to do gannets and other sea birds on the Great Saltee Island in County Wexford Ireland. As many of you probably know I don't go out of Manchester much and I jumped at this opportunity. Great Saltee is a fabulous place and Clive was a fabulous host. I was blessed with light and managed some half decent shots. Some of the images I took there will be published shortly in a book by Eric Dempsey

Pied Wagtail, Manchester City Centre, 28.08.10

Grey Wagtail, Manchester City Centre

A pair of grey wagtails nested close to the Black Redstarts nest. This bird perched very briefly on the fine architecture. I took a shot with the bird dead centre of the frame and another recomposing in-camera for a better composition. I will propbably enter this image into the IWP competition.

Spotted Flycatcher, Maynooth College, Ireland

Spotted flycatcher is one of my favourite birds. I have plenty of shots of them in usual habitat. On this occasion I went for something a little different. I placed myself at the end of a bicycle rail and hoped the bird would accept me if I kept very still. After an hour or so, it did.
