THE WALKDEN MYSTERY GARDEN BIRDS

THE CONSENSUS OF OPINION ON THEIR IDENTIFICATION

by Ian McKerchar

During November 2006, 2 unusual birds similar in appearance visited a garden in Walkden and as their identification was a complete mystery to the owners of the garden the 2 photographs below were sent to County Bird Recorder Judith Smith. As their identity was not immediately apparent I placed the images on this website asking for opinions from county birders.

After receiving a tremendous response, several species were offered or thought possible but one not only seemed most likely but had the overwhelming consensus of opinion. Most observers felt that the birds were infact leucistic Blackbirds, an opinion, however unusual and un-Blackbird like they might appear initially, I too agreed with. Blackbirds are prone to leucism and whilst this is not necessarily the definitive answer, until further information to the contrary it would seem that leucistic Blackbirds they will stay!

I am of course, always prepared to reconsider this identification should anyone out there feel they have the definitive answer and would welcome any comments to be sent to me here.

There were too many contributing birders to acknowledge individually, so I would like to thank all of you for taking the time and effort to assist with this conundrum which is hopefully now resolved?
