Above, the Manchester Birding Tournament Trophy, very kindly donated by Paul Heaton and presented to the winning birder for his 12 month reign!
Welcome to the Manchester Birding Tournament. I set the Tournament up in 2007 and it ran for four years until 2010. This page has been kept for prosperity, so that visitors might see just how productive it was and just what can be achieved by a band of enthusiastic birders. Basically it was intended to be a year long contest (running 1st January to 31st December) where, for each uncommon, scarce or rare county bird you find, you'd receive points and the birder with the most points at the end of the year wins! It was intended to be entirely fun and as competitive as each individual wanted to make it. Some liked to go 'all out' whereas others liked to incorporate it in their usual casual birding at their local patch, the beauty of the contest was that all birders had an equal chance, anyone can find good county birds, and many county birders joined in and gave it a go? The contest was open to all, was entirely free to enter and contributed to the finding of many good county birds though the years. Most importantly it encouraged participants to explore previously seldom covered sites or to cover their preferred local patch more frequently and to enjoy getting back to finding their very own birds!
