MANCHESTER 'MAY-HEM' Welcome to the Manchester 'May-hem', a county listing contest for the month of May.
SEE HERE FOR THE 2008 'MAY-HEM' BIRD RACE RESULTS The contest will take the form of 4 guises, these are: 1. The Manchester Monthly Birding Marathon. 2. The Manchester Single Site Day Bird Race. 3. The Manchester Eco-Day Bird Race. 4. The Manchester 24 hour Bird Race.
1. The Manchester Monthly Birding Marathon. How many bird species can you see in our county during the month of May? All species must be seen (heard only are not countable), acceptable under the website guidelines and any sites are useable, only individuals may enter this contest. 2. The Manchester Single Site Bird Race. Pick your local, favourite or someone else's patch and find as many species as you can in a 24 hour period to run from midnight to midnight during May. Heard only species are countable, any site can be used (it must be a single site i.e. Wigan Flashes, Pennington Flash, Carrington Moss, Smithills Moor etc, please contact me if you need to check your site), all species must be acceptable under the website guidelines, teams of any size may enter (single observers or otherwise) but all team members must see/hear all species. 3. The Manchester Eco-day Bird Race. It's only right we do 'our bit' for the environment (while the full blown 24 hour listers tear up the county ☺), so have a go and see how many species you can see in the county using only leg power in a 24 hour period running from midnight to midnight during May. Walking, running, cycling, pogo-sticks, space-hoppers (remember them?) are all acceptable, infact anything that doesn't involve any form of motorised transport. Entrants can use any county sites, heard only species are countable and all must be acceptable under website guidelines, teams of any size may enter (single observers or otherwise) but all team members must see/hear all species. 4. The Manchester 24 hour Bird Race. The full-blown, real deal! Just how many species is it possible to see in our county in any one 24 hour period during May? As a contest between teams, fairness must prevail and as such only publicly accessible sites are useable (this means no private or permit only sites nor any involving sensitive breeding species the locations of which are withheld), heard only species are countable as is any mode of transport, teams must consist of 2 to 4 people, the 24 hour period will run from midnight to midnight, all members of the group must see/hear all species and they must be acceptable under website guidelines. Sites excluded from the actual 24 hour bird race contest may of course be visited (if you have time!) in order to set a full county day record (which already exists on the website) but for the sake of the Manchester 24 hour Bird Race total they will be omitted so each team has the same chances.
What to do Entrants to the contests should acknowledge their intention to compete, to me 7 full days before their intended 'race day', only one date will be accepted (you can't have more than one go at a single contest) although another date may be negotiated at my discretion in the event of reasonable and unforeseeable circumstances i.e. illness, really crappy weather (and I mean really crappy but what are the chances of that though!) etc. Team members for the full 24 hour Bird Race or for multi-member teams in the other categories should also be submitted 7 full days before 'race day' and all information will be entered into the 'May-hem Bird Race Board' for all to see! Entrants cannot use the same day for more than one contest (like entering the Eco-day race but using the same total in the single site race) but you can enter all competitions using different dates if you should so desire.
The more that enter the more interesting and exiting it will be so let me know your intentions HERE
