A record shot. Despite not much being visible in this image the bird displayed a full suite of 'solid' adult Caspian features, including the underside of p10.

Yellow-legged Gull, Pennington Flash, 20.10.09 (John Tymon)

Although the lighting in this image is poor, the mantle colour of the Yellow-legged Gull is slap bang in between the Lesser Black-backed Gull and Black-headed Gull in hue.

Yellow-legged Gull, Pennington Flash, 20.10.09 (John Tymon)

It's yellow legged are visible here and a complete black subterminal band on p5. Note the outer primaries are still in growth.

Yellow-legged Gull, Pennington Flash, 20.10.09 (John Tymon)

Note the mantle tone to the other gulls.

Yellow-legged Gull, Castleshaw Reservoirs, 22.10.09 (Mark Rigby)

No mistaking those yellow-legs, though it should be borne in mind that Herring Gulls CAN show yellow legs!

Yellow-legged Gull, Castleshaw Reservoirs, 22.10.09 (Mark Rigby)

Compare the mantle tone to the single argenteus Herring Gull asleep behind.

Yellow-legged Gull, Castleshaw Reservoirs, 22.10.09 (Mark Rigby)

Note the rather more 'pear' shaped head here, often referred to (mostly quite rightly) as a feature of Caspian Gull. This bird's bill is clearly large and thick with a very blunt tip and obvious goyns. Classic Yellow-legged Gull.

Yellow-legged Gull, Castleshaw Reservoirs, 22.10.09 (Mark Rigby)

The outer three primaries are still in growth but p5 has broad and complete black subterminal band.

Yellow-legged Gull, Castleshaw Reservoirs, 22.10.09 (Mark Rigby)

Despite still being in growth, p10 has a large and complete white tip to it. Note the birds broadness across the chest in this image and dark looking remiges when viewed from below.

A 2nd winter bird unfortunately taken looking into the sun!

Iceland Gull, Pennington Flash, 06.01.10 (Dennis Atherton)

An intruging bird showing apparent charcteristics of Kumlien's Gull, probably a second-winter. There seems to be a greyish-brown wash on the outer primaries (atleast) with paler (whitish) edges visible on this image.

An intruging bird showing apparent charcteristics of Kumlien's Gull, probably a second-winter. The effects of lighting etc cannot be underestimated and can cloud our judgement rather when assessing this bird from the images.

Iceland Gull, Pennington Flash, 06.01.10 (Dennis Atherton)

An intruging bird showing apparent charcteristics of Kumlien's Gull, probably a second-winter. In this image the outer webs of gthe primaries appear to have a brownish wash over them but terminally they look pale, though the latter is difficult to judge from the image.
