In 2010, Tameside birder Karen Foulkes found a male Black Redstart in Ashton-under-Lyne town centre. Her diligent surveillance of this bird soon payed further dividends as breeding was finally proved with three juveniles fledged. This article however, has only one intention and that is to exhibit the superb series of images taken by Adrian Dancy of this family of Black Redstarts. Whilst the Internet contains many images of this species, such superb results for breeding birds and especially juveniles are much more uncommon and deserve a wider audience.

My thanks are to Karen for both finding the birds in the first place and for keeping me right up to date with their saga and of course to Adrian for supplying me with such magnificent images to use here.

Karen's own, very intimate chronicle of her exploits following this family of Black Redstarts can be read here
