RING-NECKED DUCK

Judging just how many records of Ring-necked Duck there have been in the county is no easy affair due to the often sporadic (although at times annual) re-appearance of a drake which also spent much time in Lancashire, visiting our county on occasion and often touring several sites on each visit.

All things considered it seems fair to say that all sightings are accountable by 3 birds (all drakes).

1988   Pennington Flash Last week of April Drake
1991   Chorlton Water Park 19th Feb-March An immature drake, which stayed into March
1993   Heaton Park Reservoir 6-8th Jan Drake, also seen at Pennington Flash 26th Jan, Amberswood 7th April, Doffcocker Lodge 18-19th Apr, Horrock's Flash 3rd Jun and High Rid Reservoir 27th Nov
1994   Elton Reservoir 26th Feb presumed same drake as in 1991 and 1993, also seen at Chorlton Water Park 28th Feb-1st Mar, Horrock's Flash 20th-22nd May and again 30th May and Pennington Flash 29th May
1995   Jumbles Reservoir 5th, 12-13th Mar Drake, wintered in Lancashire, same individual as in 1991, 1993 and 1994
2003   Rumworth 28-29th Dec Drake from Upper Rivington Reservoir in Lancashire
2004   Rumworth 2nd Jan Drake from Upper Rivington Reservoir in Lancashire, also same bird as Rumworth 2003
2006   Rumworth 16th April Drake, also seen at Chorlton Water Park 26th April (where it was trying to entice a female Tufted Duck from her mate) and probably the same individual as Rumworth 2003/2004.
