RED-THROATED DIVER

Not only the largest ever flock of Red-throated Divers in the county's history but perhaps also one of the most astonishing bird sights too was a flock of 16 on Scotmans Flash on 18th April 1992. Initially there was a flock of 13 on the water at 11:20, itself a staggering sight, then at 12:05 another diver flew in (with the flock calling excitedly) from high in the east, at 12:30 the same happened again as another diver flew in from high in the east, circled the flash but flew off north-west without landing. The flock on the water had by now increased to 15 birds at this point but soon they became restless and dispersed, randomly at first, then re-grouped and climbed steadily to the north-west. A single diver remained on the water and stayed until late afternoon.
