RED KITE

 

The status of Red Kite as a more regular visitor in the county continues to grow and grow every year along with increasing records but despite this it remains one of the most sought after annually occurring species on the county list.

1876   near Manchester   last county specimen to be shot
1993     10th Dec The first confirmed county record since 1876, involving 3 separate reports, all involving the same bird from Broadheath at 14:30, Shell Carrington about the same time and from junction 14 of the M62 at Wardley at 15:45
1996   Heaton Park 15th Jan seen rising out of the woods in the morning having possibly roosted there
2003   Hobson's Moor 27th Mar 2 birds flew east, the first and only multiple county sighting
2006   Watergrove Reservoir 25th March The first individual of this species to be successfully photographed
2008   Hollingworth/Lees Hill area 5-7th Jun Possibly in the general area since the end of May. The first county record of a bid present or more than a single day!
