BEWICK'S SWAN

An unfortunately increasingly uncommon, nay rare, visitor to the county things weren't always that way! The largest recorded flock was of 80 birds flying west over Egerton on the 6th November, 1997.

The largest flock ever to be recorded down on a water in the past 15 years atleast (as opposed to just overflying) was of 21 birds grounded during foggy weather at Chorlton Water Park on 20th December, 2006.

In 1993 two birds wearing blue neck collars were found in the county, the coloured collars indicated that they had both been ringed at Naryan Mar Tundra Reserve on the Pechora Estuary in Siberia. The first bird, 303P, was seen at Audenshaw Reservoirs on the 3rd January along with 10 other Bewick's and the second bird, 450P, was seen on Heaton Park Reservoir on the 18th November.
