ARCTIC TERN

Often, large flocks of Arctic Tern occur in the county during passage and nearly always in the month of May. There has been two separate flocks of over 100 Arctic Terns recorded, but the largest ever, by some way, was a flock of 165 birds at Hollingworth Lake on the 2nd May 1983.

An unusual record refers to a distressed bird found at Smithills, Horwich on the 2nd August 1984 which was successfully released the next day.
